PalmOne vs. Pocket PC:
Which one is right for you?
What is the difference between
Palm PDAs and Pocket PC PDA? Nothing! Nothing in
terms of performance, compatibility with Windows,
ease/difficulty of use, features, or how they both function.
Both devices can be purchased in the same price range with
Palm being only slightly cheaper. The software that
comes standard with the Pocket PC is virtually the same
depending on the model of course. Camera, wireless, Outlook
compatible, key boards of all kinds and so on. In short,
the features are what drives the price and if you are a new or
novice user, watch your wallet.
The top selling PDA is the Palm Zire 72 which is $249.00.
It is compact, has a very bright screen, and a 1.2 megapixel
camera (no flash). It is your basic PDA. However,
if you want to show off to your friends go for the the PalmOne
LifeDrive. This baby has 4GB of memory which is a true
hard drive. You'll need $500.00 for this one but who
wants 4GB of memory that is in peril with a slip of the hand?
HP and Dell have all the same
bells and whistles but are a little larger and thus heavier
than the Palm counterparts. Pocket PCs tend to have
excellent screen resolution and are good for multitasking
(running several programs at the same time).
Historically the Pocket PC was more expensive than Palm but in
recent years the prices have become very competitive.
The PDA/Cellphones have become
very popular. If you need the convenience of both, look at the
Treo 650. It's the "Editor's Choice" by PC Magazine.
Obviously Quickwork is a
Palm-based application so we have to be a little biased.
The device itself is meaningless to you if the application you
are using is difficult to learn, frustrating to set up, and
there is no support available. Make an informed
investment decision on both the device and the software and
laugh if someone tries to sell you $1000 worth of software and
tells you that Palm is going out of business. Since the
devices are practically the same, don't spend more than $300
on a PDA. All software is different but at the same time
the same
